Vanessa Maria Mirza is a choreographer/visual artist of Anglo-Indian heritage, born and raised in Kolkata (India), she subsequently based in Taipei(Taiwan) and Redding,(California, USA) between 2008-2013. Vanessa holds four years of professional dance training at the Taipei National University of the Arts where she was a graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts(MFA), Choreography program. Her intensive studies and research work with internationally acclaimed choreographers and dancers such as Ming-Lung Yang (USA/Taiwan), Xiao-Xiong Zhang (Australia/Taiwan), Graeme Collins (Australia/Hong Kong) and Hsiao-Mei Ho (Taiwan) have enriched her impression of contemporary dance as a performing art. She also holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration(Marketing) from St. Xavier’s College(Kolkata) (2002-2005.)
While having a keen interest in dance, she began to explore art and painting during her studies in Taipei, influenced by interactions with artists from the Czech Republic, South Africa and USA. While living and travelling through South-East Asia her works have been influenced by the aesthetics of Chinese painting and calligraphy, local culture, architecture, language and lifestyle of people. As a result of Vanessa’s interdisciplinary arts interest, a choreographic project titled ‘Dream Realms’ inspired by her paintings was presented as a forty-minute dance production, performed in Taipei, Taiwan (April 2013).
Currently located in India, she is involved in choreographic/teaching assignments with Rhythmosaic Dance Institute/Company and other local dance practitioners in Kolkata as well as continuing work on exhibitions and independent art projects of her own. Vanessa is the Visual Arts Director for Chaitown Creatives a platform for artist promotion, creative development and management. She is also the Director of Dance Bridges Festival, a newly founded international dance festival in Kolkata.
